Port of Savannah - On The Move

Kim McCloud, Director of Business Development, recently spent time in Georgia visiting the Port of Savannah. She came back with a wealth of information on the port’s explosive growth.

The Port of Savannah had its third busiest month on record in April 2022, handling just shy of 500,000 TEUs as it continues work to expand capacity. It is currently the third busiest port complex, and the fastest growing, in the country.

The technology and facilities at the Port dovetail perfectly with the range of solutions that AW2 Logistics offers to the marketplace. In particular, it complements our “Immediate Transload” Service”. This service facilitates the containing coming off the ship, being transported to an AW2 location and opened. We then unload, palletize if needed, then do an immediate transload into a FTL- 53’ U.S. over-the-road carrier for final delivery to the client. We are very aware that some companies docks are so congested that they cannot perform this service on their own dock.

“The phenomenal growth we have achieved has been made possible by the team effort of GPA and Gateway Terminals employees, the International Longshoremen’s Association, and our partners in trucking and rail,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. “Their hard work has ensured the free flow of cargo between major markets across the U.S. Southeast and the world.”

The Port of Savannah handled a record 5.6 million TEUs in 2021 amid the pandemic-fueled import boom. Amid the sustained increase in cargo volumes, the GPA has expedited more than $538 million in capacity expansion projects, initially anticipated years into the future, to better accommodate for the growth.

The growth and improvement at the Port, coupled with the devanning solution that AW2 Logistics provides, alleviates the congestion and slowness of the rail system, saving at times 7-10 days – if not more.
