Impact of the Suez Canal on U.S. Importers
The Suez Canal was shut down for 6 days. The “Ever Given” created a large backlog of hundreds of vessels waiting to pass thru to their final destination. Roughly 100+ ships are feverously trying to pass thru the canal to make up for lost time.
This has created a domino effect of backlogs at destination ports due to the sheer volume of containers arriving and is causing many sailings to be missed for its final journey. Nearly 19% ships passed thru the Suez Canal in 2020. Ultimately, this back log will have a huge impact on your whole delivery dynamic.
Expect months of Supply Chain disruption and container imbalance at certain ports. A shortage of containers will be real as not all ports are equipped to reposition empties and be sure to be on the “look out” for those creative surcharges upon receipt of your billings.
